What is a d8 used for?
In Dungeons & Dragons (5th edition) the d8 is the damage die for many common weapons, including the longsword (one-handed), rapier, battleaxe, warhammer and longbow. It is also the hit die for bards, clerics, druids, monks, rogues and warlocks, so you roll it when those characters level up or rest.
d8 odds and averages
Each number from 1 to 8 has a 12.5% chance, and the average roll is 4.5. Two d8s (2d8) range from 2 to 16 and average 9, with 9 the most likely total.
The shape of a d8
A d8 is an octahedron, like two pyramids joined at the base, with the result on the top face. Every face is the same size, so a well-made d8 is fair; a virtual one always is.
flipj uses your browser's built-in cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), the same source browsers use for encryption keys. We also avoid "modulo bias", a subtle flaw where some results come up slightly more often than others. Every result is generated on your device, so nothing you enter is sent to us.
