How to use the roll a d4

    3. Each die and the total are shown, with your recent rolls underneath.

What is a d4 used for?

In Dungeons & Dragons (5th edition) the d4 turns up more often than its size suggests:

    • Daggers, darts and clubs deal 1d4 damage.
    • Magic Missile fires three darts that each deal 1d4 + 1 force damage.
    • A potion of healing restores 2d4 + 2 hit points.
    • Bless lets allies add a d4 to attack rolls and saving throws; Bane makes enemies subtract one.

    d4 odds and averages

Each number from 1 to 4 has exactly a 25% chance. The average roll is 2.5, so 2d4 averages 5. A potion of healing (2d4 + 2) heals between 4 and 10 hit points, 7 on average.

    Reading a real d4

A physical d4 is a small pyramid (a tetrahedron), so no face points straight up. Depending on the style, the result is the number printed at the top point or along the bottom edges. A virtual d4 avoids the argument.

flipj uses your browser's built-in cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), the same source browsers use for encryption keys. We also avoid "modulo bias", a subtle flaw where some results come up slightly more often than others. Every result is generated on your device, so nothing you enter is sent to us.
